Have you been working toward implementing God’s vision for your unique purpose, but the path doesn’t seem so clear anymore? Or maybe the dream you were so passionate about is creating more stress than joy. Perhaps you keep trying to walk in what you feel called to do, but you keep going in circles or spinning your wheels with no fruit to show for all your effort. So now you might be doubting yourself and wondering how to recognize a vision from God.
When you get confused or hit blocks, it doesn’t mean that your original vision was not actually from God. If you’re pretty clear about the difference you feel called to make in the world with your God-given abilities and passions, you might have just veered a little off the intended path along the way.
At times though, that might not be the case, and you may actually be out of alignment with a vision that God would have for you to fulfill. It’s important to be aware of the indicators that you’re out of the will of God so that you can seek God to correct your course.
5 Signs You’re Not Following a Vision from God
There definitely are signs that can pretty clearly show you if something is not part of the vision of God for your life. Some of these red flags include recognizing if the vision is…
- Not following the principles taught in God’s Word spiritually or morally
- Not purposed to give God glory, but focused on uplifting or rewarding you with status, spotlight, power, or money
- Not something for which you feel a true desire, passion, or leading to do
- Not a match with any of your natural gifts or strengths
- Not focused on a positive and godly contribution to your life, the lives of other people, or the world as a whole
If any of these are true in the plan you’re following right now, pray for wisdom on what changes you need to make to align with God’s will for you. But if none of those are issues and you still feel like something’s not quite right, consider if there may be some mindset changes to make, and also seek God to discern if you might need to adjust your focus or actions.
How to Discern if You’re Still Following God’s Vision
The most important way to ensure you’re walking in God’s vision is to walk closely with the Lord and bring all of your ideas, goals and uncertainties to Him. In addition, there are some things you can honestly ask yourself to contribute to the process of discerning God’s plan vs. your own.
In my video “7 Ways to Discern if You’re Still Following God’s Vision” I share 7 guidelines you can use to evaluate if you’re still most likely following God’s vision vs an idea from your own mind, someone else, or the world.
Once you’ve explored these 7 areas, find the sweet spot where they all converge and submit your ideas around that to God so you that He can help you with any changes and with your next steps. In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps. (Proverbs 16:9 NIV)
It’s so important to be intentional to regularly take time to pause and reflect on where you’ve been, where you’re at, and where you’re going with God, especially before you make decisions to move forward with new ideas or change directions. Partnering with God, with Him actually being the leader, and pacing yourself in His timing, will ensure your vision and plans are pleasing to Him and producing the fruit He desires.
Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. ~Proverbs 16:3 NIV
